Minimally Invasive Breast Surgery(Stereotactic Breast Biopsy)What is a minimally invasive breast biopsy? Ten years ago all breast biopsies were done by "open" surgery; i.e. the patient went to the operating room, was put to sleep and a large skin incision was made in the breast to take out the suspicious area or lump. Today, however, much newer and less invasive techniques are used. The surgeons at Windham Surgical Group: Drs. Ridyard, Kloss, and Kolodziejczak are highly skilled in these new techniques. The Stereotactic Breast Biopsy is used to sample suspicious breast tissue seen on a mammogram. It uses a computer along with a small needle to literally "suck" out (fine needle aspiration)the suspicious area. This is done through a very small incision using only a little local anesthesia. The entire procedure takes only about 20 minutes! This is a far cry from the old surgical breast biopsy which took several hours going to the hospital and operating room. In addition, the recovery time from this minimally invasive breast biopsy is almost immediate! Many patients return to work that same morning. The biopsy is sent to the pathologist to be evaluated under the microscope. These results will be called to you in approximately 2-3 days after the biopsy. This new, minimally invasive technique allows a very rapid, accurate sampling of the area of question. It gets you back to your daily living very quickly with a minimal of pain and surgical trauma. And best of all, of course, most of the time (approximately 80% in all patients) the results are benign (noncancerous)! We can get the answer needed without a large incision and most often, you won't need any other surgery. ...more information on breast cancer & sentinel lymph node biopsy
